Jurançon
The winemaking tradition was already firmly rooted in the region since Roman times. Archaeological finds have revealed traces of this heritage. Over the centuries, the wine produced in this area has been ever more appreciated. A historical anecdote made its reputation: it is said that Henri IV received a sip of Jurançon at his baptism.
At the end of the 19th century, Jurançon wines were hit by vine diseases that affected their quality. This ordeal even led to the destruction of a large part of the vineyard. That quickly became history thanks to a collective that worked tirelessly to restore the illustrious shine of this terroir.
During this same period, the area of the Jurançon vineyard was defined. Later, the AOC Jurançon label was awarded to the white wine, and Jurançon Sec obtained AOC certification. During the nineties, it received the “Vendanges Tardives” (Late Harvest) mention.
Wine varieties to discover
Among the varieties of Jurançon wines, we can mention 3 types. First, the Jurançon Sec. This category stands out for its exquisite aromatic freshness. In the early years of its keeping, Jurançon Sec is dominated by notes evoking exotic fruits and citrus. This combination delivers an intriguing acidity that will refresh even the most demanding palates.
After extended ageing, this wine transforms to develop spicy and woody notes. It is a remarkable product that will enhance your gastronomic creations.
Secondly, we’ll mention the very sweet Jurançon. It has a coppery robe with a golden glow. This wine will particularly seduce you because it is characterised by a subtle union of an acid side and a sweet side. Its liveliness is highly favoured by wine enthusiasts as it pairs with a wide range of dishes.
When this wine is young, it seduces with fruity aromas combining citrus, pineapple and passion fruit. Moreover, Jurançon can be a top-quality keeping wine. Over the years it develops new dimensions where notes of honey, candied fruit and white flowers come through.
We will also mention Jurançon Vendanges Tardives. This category of Jurançon wines comes from berries dehydrated by the regional winds. This specificity allows them to preserve their aromas and sugars. As you taste them, you’ll discover spicy notes revealing dried apricot, honey, quince paste and also gingerbread.
